Is this thing on?

Postby AJ Todd » Fri Mar 12, 2010 10:10 am

This week, while taking the subway home Northbound from Queen Station, I was in the last car waiting for the train to depart when the guard comes over the intercom and says..."Yeah, there is another train behind us but these ignorant people still ruuuuuuush the caaaaaaars."

I don't know if he had his mike on the proper setting and meant to talk to the operator or if he actually wanted to talk to all of the passengers but either way he was way out of line.

I fully agree that people rushing the subway is pointless and dangerous but you don't come over the PA system and insult your riders!

Jerk!

Because some of these riders need a reality check. They are ignorant of the fact that there is a train behind the one they're rushing just two minutes away. I would say that. Heck, close the door on them. This happens quite a lot at Spadina. People get the door to the face because they don't move down the platform.

Are they indeed? No countdown on the overhead displays?
Being at a loss for information as to when the next train is arriving, perhaps running for the train is an understandable response to not knowing, and not wanting to be left waiting, perhaps caught by another unexplained delay (I once let a train go being sure of a speedy subsequent, only to find myself waiting with an alarmingly growing number of others until finally told that the line was stopped between hitther-and-yon until some issues was dealt with, yadda, etc. and so forth), or simply being later than they already are.
Maybe they've finished a long shift, and they're exhausted, maybe they're making an extra effort because they have something important to get to.

Human nature is what it is. Sarcasm within-the-ranks of many an industry (and professions) is common and even necessary to cope with the stress arising from that and lighten the overall load.
Broadcasting the like - and one's disdain - to all assembled bystanders (those already on the train, natch, and not rushing) is breathtakingly rude and smarmy.

There doesn't need to be overhead displays. There are signs near the DWA outlining the service frequency for all times of subway operation. But unfortunately, most riders don't know that.
